Module V· Cultural Fit & DACH EtiquetteBasic
Question
What is the handshake and greeting norm in IB interviews?
Answer
Standard greeting
- Stand up when the banker enters.
- Make eye contact.
- Give a firm but not aggressive handshake.
- State your name clearly.
- Use the banker's name if introduced.
- Sit only after invited or once the banker sits.
With several bankers
Greet everyone calmly. If hierarchy is obvious, acknowledge the senior person naturally, but do not make the sequence awkward.
Cross-cultural note
US bankers may move quickly to first names; German-speaking senior bankers may remain formal.
Pitfalls
staying seated, weak handshake, over-firm handshake, mispronouncing names, rushing into your pitch before the greeting is complete.
