Question

What do you do when deal volume for your target sector is too thin (e.g. 3 deals in 5 years)?

Answer

Options:

  • Broaden the universe — adjacent industries (e.g. if the target is 'engineered components', extend to 'industrial machinery').
  • Broaden the geography — European mid-cap deals instead of only the domestic region, with a region-adjustment caveat.
  • Broaden the vintage — 7 years instead of 5, with a recency weighting.
  • Listed-company take-privates as a proxy — premium data is often better disclosed.
  • Trading Comps + a sector control-premium study as a surrogate. With very thin data: de-prioritize the method, and flag the pitch slide explicitly as 'limited precedent activity'.
