Question
What are the top 3 behavioral questions in an IB interview, and how do you structure your answers?
Answer
The top 3 classics
- "Tell me about a time you faced a challenge / failure." STAR format: Situation (15 sec), Task (5 sec), Action (30 sec), Result + learning (15 sec). Pick a real story with a concrete outcome. NOT "I'm a perfectionist" (cliché).
- "Tell me about a time you worked in a team." Ideally a conflict situation you managed well. Senior bankers assess teamwork under pressure.
- "Why investment banking?" Avoid: "money" (off-tone) and "prestige" (comes across as naive). Instead, the three-pillar argument:
- Speed of learning: deal exposure, financial depth.
- Intellectual challenge: complex problems, not a routine job.
- Career optionality: CFO, PE, hedge fund, corporate strategy.
Behavioral pitfall
too general, without concrete examples. A top answer ALWAYS contains specific stories.
Prep tip
prepare 5–7 stories that cover several behavioral questions.
