Question
How do you structure a 'Why Frankfurt vs. London' or 'Why Munich vs. Zurich' career-strategy answer?
Answer
Arguments for Frankfurt:
- A concentration of mid-market champions: 80%+ of large-/mid-/small-cap HQs are in the country. If a regional specialization is your career goal, Frankfurt is close to the clients.
- Language/network fit: cultural fluency in the local middle-market network.
- DCM leadership: Frankfurt is a hub for private placements and home to the ECB. Arguments for London: (1) market depth: global mandates, tier-1 talent, more cross-border M&A exposure. (2) career optionality: faster paths into PE/hedge funds, international recruiting. (3) language diversity: English as standard opens Asia/the Middle East. Arguments for Munich: (1) HQ concentration for industrials/auto/tech (BMW, Siemens, Allianz). (2) a quality-of-life premium. Arguments for Zurich: (1) Switzerland-focused banks (UBS, and private-wealth houses), a private-wealth hub. (2) tax advantages. Career-strategy tip: 'Keep the first 2–3 years as broad as possible (London/Frankfurt), then specialize.' If a pure-play regional career is the goal, Frankfurt > London makes sense.
