Question
How do you structure a '4-quadrant stock idea' answer for a senior banker who wants more depth?
Answer
The four-quadrant framework:
- Top-down (sector/market): 'Specialty chemicals is growing 4–5% p.a. and consolidating structurally. A large-cap peer's announced spin-off is a re-rating trigger for the whole sector.'
- Bottom-up (company-specific): 'The company has a margin recovery from 12% to an expected 15% through [a concrete strategic action]. Net debt/EBITDA falls from 3.2x to 2.5x by 2026.'
- Valuation: 'The stock trades at 7.5x forward EBITDA vs. a sector median of 9.5x. The implied 21% discount doesn't reflect the margin-recovery story.'
- Catalysts/risk-reward: 'Catalyst: Q3 earnings on [date], a capital markets day in Q4. Asymmetric risk-reward: 30% upside on the multiple reversion, 10% downside to a worst-case margin stagnation.' Pro tip: quantify the asymmetry (a 3:1 risk-reward), don't leave it qualitative. Buy-side bankers love it.
