How do you determine the useful life of an identifiable intangible?

Answer

Useful life reflects the period over which the intangible is expected to generate economic benefits. Consider legal life, contract renewal, customer attrition, technology obsolescence, competitive dynamics, product cycle, and expected use. Finite-lived intangibles are amortized; indefinite-lived intangibles are not amortized but tested for impairment.
