Question

How do you respond to 'Sell me this pen'?

Answer

Do not start with product features. Start by identifying need.

  1. Ask what the person needs the pen for: notes, client signatures, daily use, or gifting.
  2. Adapt the pitch to that need.
  3. Translate features into value.
  4. Close with a low-pressure recommendation.

'Before I sell it, I would ask what you need it for. If it is for client signatures, reliability and professional appearance matter. This pen writes cleanly, looks understated, and avoids the awkward moment of a pen failing during a signature. If you need it for daily notes, the value is comfort and speed. So I would position the pen differently depending on your use case.'

Sales structure, client orientation, and composure under a strange prompt. The point is not the pen; it is whether you diagnose before pitching.
